How to give your server more RAM without reinstalling anything

If the server stutters with memory maxed out, restarts by itself or you're about to add mods, it's time for more RAM. At NapNodes you add it without reinstalling or losing anything, and the new RAM arrives on restart. There are two ways; here's which one suits you.

How to tell whether your server is short of RAM

In your server's “Home”, the “Memory (RAM)” gauge shows what it uses against what it has, and “Advanced settings” → “Performance” has the graph. If it lives at the maximum and there's stuttering too, the game may even restart by itself to avoid freezing.

In Minecraft a high gauge is normal: Java reserves the memory it's been given and is slow to release it. What really says it's short of RAM is stuttering and restarting by itself. If the server crashes by itself twice in an hour, you get an email saying whether memory was the cause.

Before paying for more, try what's free: restart, remove the mods or plugins you don't use and lower the view distance. The RAM calculator tells you how much you need for your game, players and mods.

No server yet? Game servers from €6 a month, no contract and a full refund within 72 hours. Or create a free server, no card needed.

Option 1: “More RAM”, a bigger plan

  1. In “My plan & invoices”, press “More RAM”

On your plan's card. The bigger plans for your game appear.

  2. Pick the plan

With its “Choose” button. You only pay the difference for the days left until your next renewal; after that, the new plan at its price.

  3. Restart the server

The new RAM arrives without reinstalling anything, on restart. The world, the mods and the address don't change.

  4. If you made a mistake

A change you requested and didn't pay for isn't charged automatically: “I don't want the change” removes it, and otherwise it's cancelled after 7 days.

Option 2: “Buy RAM” for your account

  1. In “My servers”, press “Buy RAM”

It's also in “Buy”, the first card: “RAM only”. It's plain RAM, without choosing a game.

  2. Choose how much and how often you pay

From 1 to 16 GB, monthly or every 3 months. Each GB comes with 5 GB of disk. If you already had RAM bought this way, the new RAM is added to it and today you only pay for what's left of its period.

  3. Press “Pay”

Once paid, it's free in your account.

  4. Give it to the server with “Adjust”

On the server's card, raise its RAM with what you have free and restart it.

“More RAM” or “Buy RAM”?

“More RAM” if you have one server and want it bigger: it stays one plan with one invoice, and you get the bigger plan's disk.

“Buy RAM” if you want to fine-tune, for example add 1 GB without jumping plans, or if you plan to split it across several servers: it works for any game and you move it whenever you like. It has its own renewal and shows up in “My plan & invoices” as “RAM only”.

Frequently asked questions

Is the server reinstalled when I add RAM?

No. It's the same server with more RAM: it applies when you restart it, and the world, the mods and the address stay the same.

How much do I pay if I upgrade mid-month?

Only the difference between the two plans for the days left until your renewal. From then on, the new plan at its price.

Can I lower a server's RAM?

Yes, with “Adjust” on its card: whatever you take away is left free in your account for another server. What you pay only goes down if you cancel a plan or the RAM bought separately, from “My plan & invoices”.

Why does my Minecraft server use almost all its RAM?

Java reserves the memory it's been given and is slow to release it, so the gauge is usually high. If there's no stuttering and no restarting by itself, it isn't short of RAM.

Shall we set it up for you?

Game servers from €6 a month, never oversold: your RAM is yours alone. And if you'd rather start without paying, there's a free server, no card needed.
