How the game works out the colour

Minecraft doesn't just paint the dye on: it adds up the red, green and blue of every dye (and of the colour the piece already had), averages them and then brightens the result so it doesn't come out dull. That's why two identical dyes give the same colour as one, and red with yellow gives an orange, but not the orange dye's (#D78331 against #F9801D). The calculator does the same maths as the game, number for number.

What it's for on a server

  • Teams and events: one colour per team in a UHC, a Manhunt or a hunger games, to tell each other apart from afar.
  • Clans and ranks: the clan's or the staff's uniform, in your logo's colour.
  • Rewards and shops: pieces in a colour you can only get on the server. To give them a name and enchantments, use the /give generator.

Commands go in chat with operator permissions, or in the server console (without the slash). At NapNodes, in «Console». More in the guide Minecraft admin commands.

Frequently asked questions

How do you dye leather armour?

In Java, in a crafting table: the leather piece and one to eight dyes, in any slot. The order changes nothing. You can dye it again on top, and the colour it already had counts as one more input in the mix.

Why can't I get the exact colour I want?

Because with dyes there are only a few thousand possible colours: the game averages the dyes and then brightens the result. The calculator finds the closest mix; for the exact colour (your logo's, for example) use the /give, which accepts any colour.

How do I remove the dye?

Use the piece on a cauldron with water: it goes back to the leather colour. Each time uses up a little of the cauldron's water.

What about Bedrock?

In Bedrock you dye it in a cauldron with water and dye, and the commands are different. The /give on this page is for Java (the edition Paper servers run).

Why does my /give command fail?

Almost always because of the version: since 1.20.5 items take components in square brackets, and since 1.21.5 the colour is a plain number. Pick your server's version in the calculator. You need operator permissions.

No server yet?

At NapNodes you get a free Minecraft server, no card needed, on Paper and the latest version: hand out uniforms to your team from day one.
