Stack and shulker box calculator

Type how many blocks you need, what you already have or the dimensions of what you're building, and we tell you how many stacks, shulker boxes and chests that is. No maths by hand and no running out halfway through the build.

How much do you need?

A number (“5000”), what you have (“12 stacks and 20”, “3 sb 5 s”, “2 double chests”) or dimensions in blocks (“20x10x5”).

What does it stack to?

5,000 items are

2 shulker boxes, 24 stacks and 8 items

Stacks in total
79
Shulker boxes
3
Chests (or barrels)
3
Double chests
2

Doesn't fit in your inventory (36 slots): it takes 79.

Build it on your free server

A Minecraft server for you and your friends, 3 GB and no card.

The maths it does

  • 1 stack = 64 blocks (or 16, depending on the item).
  • 1 shulker box or 1 chest = 27 stacks = 1,728 blocks.
  • 1 double chest = 54 stacks = 3,456 blocks.
  • Your inventory = 36 slots = 2,304 blocks (not counting armour or the offhand).

That's why big builds are counted in shulkers: 20,000 blocks are 11 shulker boxes, 15 stacks and 32 items, and they fit in 12 boxes.

Before a big build on a server

  1. Work out the blocks of each material here (dimensions are best; for a building, “Hollow inside”).
  2. Split it between the builders: everyone knows how many shulkers they have to fill.
  3. If you're the admin, WorldEdit fills walls and floors in one go, and with /give you hand out materials in creative.

Frequently asked questions

How many blocks are in a stack?

64 for almost everything. Ender pearls, eggs, snowballs, signs and empty buckets stack to 16, and tools, armour and potions don't stack at all (each one takes a slot).

How many blocks fit in a shulker box?

A shulker box has 27 slots, like a chest: 27 stacks of 64 are 1,728 blocks. A double chest (54 slots) full of full shulker boxes holds 93,312 blocks.

How many blocks do I need for a hollow cube?

The whole cube minus the inside: a solid 20×10×20 is 4,000 blocks; hollow, one block thick, it's 4,000 − 18×8×18 = 1,408. Tick “Hollow inside” and the calculator does it for you.

Can I type “stacks” and “shulkers” like in chat?

Yes: “12 stacks and 20”, “3 sb 5 s” (sb is a shulker box and s is a stack, like in the calculator mods) or “2 double chests”. The calculator adds it up and splits it again.

Building in one friend's world, only when they're online?

With a server, the world stays on even when the host isn't playing, and everyone builds their part when they can. At NapNodes the RAM in your plan is yours alone and each machine's load is public on the status page. Try it with a free 3 GB Minecraft server, no card and no end date.
