Minecraft MOTD generator
Type the two lines of your server's message, add colours and styles with the buttons (they go wherever your cursor is) and see it as it looks in the server list. Below you get the line to paste into server.properties, already written so no odd symbols show up.
This is how it looks in the server list:
For server.properties
Replace the motd= line you already have with this one. Symbols and accented letters are written as §, ñ…, so you don't get stray “” characters.
motd=§6§lMy server§r §7· Survival
§aJoin with your friends §8| §bno lag
With the § symbol
For MOTD plugins or sites that accept the § as it is.
§6§lMy server§r §7· Survival §aJoin with your friends §8| §bno lag
How to put it on your server
- Stop the server: if it's running, some versions rewrite server.properties when they shut down and your change is lost.
- Open server.properties and replace the motd= line with the one you copied.
- Save, start the server and refresh the server list in the game.
Want the 64×64 icon too? Make it with the server icon maker; and if something doesn't show up, it's all step by step in the guide MOTD and server icon (in Spanish). To see the MOTD of a server that's already running, exactly as anyone sees it, use “Is my Minecraft server online?”.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I paste the line?
In server.properties, in the server's main folder. Replace the motd= line that's already there with the one you copy here, save with the server stopped and start it.
Why does it show § instead of §?
It's the same symbol, written in a way server.properties always understands. If you paste the § as it is, depending on the version you may get “§” or a box in the list. The same happens with accented letters, which is why they're written that way too.
Why isn't my bold showing?
Because in Minecraft a colour code clears any style before it. Put the colour first and the style after: §6§l comes out gold and bold; §l§6, just gold.
How many lines can it have?
Two. If one is very long, the server list cuts it off: check the preview and always test in the game.
Does it work for Bedrock?
No: it's for Minecraft Java. Bedrock servers are set up differently.
No server yet?
At NapNodes you have one in a couple of minutes, with server.properties at hand in the panel's Files. And the Minecraft server is free, no card and no end date.
