Minecraft gamerules: generator and converter

Since 1.21.11 every game rule has a different name, and almost everything you find online uses the old ones, which no longer do anything. Pick the rules you want and copy the commands, or paste your old commands (from a video, a datapack or server.properties) and get them back with today's names.

How to set them on your server

  1. Copy the commands above.
  2. Paste them one by one into the server console, without a slash. They also work in the game chat, with a slash in front, if you're an operator.
  3. To see how a rule is set, type its name without a value: gamerule keep_inventory.
  4. On Paper, rules belong to each world: from the console, on their own, they only change the main world. For the Nether or the End, put execute in minecraft:the_nether run (or minecraft:the_end) in front.

Rules belong to each world: if you reset the world, they go back to the defaults. And since 1.21.9, pvp, allow-nether, spawn-monsters and enable-command-block are no longer read from server.properties: if you have them there, run them through the converter and type them in the console. What each rule does and which ones are best left alone, in the gamerules guide; the rest of the commands for running a server, in the one on admin commands.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't gamerule keepInventory true work?

Because since Minecraft 1.21.11 it's called keep_inventory. Mojang moved every rule to lower case with underscores and renamed many of them: doDaylightCycle is advance_time, doMobSpawning is spawn_mobs, doInsomnia is spawn_phantoms. Paste what you have into “Convert old commands” and you get it back with today's names.

Which gamerules now mean the opposite?

Three: disableRaids is now raids, disableElytraMovementCheck is elytra_movement_check and disablePlayerMovementCheck is player_movement_check. To turn raids off you no longer set true, but gamerule raids false. The converter changes the value too.

What happened to doFireTick?

doFireTick and allowFireTicksAwayFromPlayer were merged into fire_spread_radius_around_player, a number: how many blocks from a player fire spreads. 128 by default, 0 so it doesn't spread and -1 so it spreads everywhere.

Where do I type the commands?

In the server console, without a slash, or in the game chat with a slash if you're an operator. The change applies straight away, without restarting, and is saved with the world.

Does it work for my datapack?

Yes. Paste the contents of the function (.mcfunction): lines with gamerule, also inside an execute … run, are converted to the new names and everything else stays as it is.

What if my server runs an older version?

Before 1.21.11 the old names (keepInventory) still work. The tool shows each rule's old name, in case your modpack needs an older version.

An up-to-date server, with the rules you want

At NapNodes you don't even need to type them: in “Settings” → “Game rules” they're all listed with a plain description, and they change with the server running in the Overworld, the Nether and the End at once. Minecraft runs on Paper and the latest version, with its “Console” in the panel if you prefer commands. The RAM in your plan is yours alone and each machine's load is public on the status page. Try it with a free Minecraft server, no card needed and no end date.
