Minecraft potion recipes: how to brew them and how long they last

Pick the potion and the form (drinkable, splash, lingering or tipped arrow). You get the ingredients in order, how long each effect lasts and the command to give it from your server. Recipes and durations taken from the game itself, with the four potions added in 1.21.

How to brew it

  1. Put up to 3 Water Bottles in the bottom of the brewing stand and Blaze Powder in the fuel slot (each one lasts 20 batches).
  2. On top, Nether Wart → Awkward Potion.
  3. On top, Magma Cream → Potion of Fire Resistance.
  4. On top, Redstone Dust → Potion of Fire Resistance (long).

Each step takes 20 seconds. With 3 bottles at once you get 3 potions for the same ingredient.

Brewing stand basics

  1. It's crafted with a blaze rod and three cobblestone (or blackstone, or cobbled deepslate). The rod comes from blazes in Nether fortresses; nether wart, from those same fortresses.
  2. Up to 3 water bottles go at the bottom; the ingredient on top; blaze powder, the fuel, on the left.
  3. Almost all of them start the same way: nether wart (awkward potion) and then the effect ingredient. After that, if you want, redstone to make it last longer or glowstone to raise it to level II.
  4. The fermented spider eye «flips» the effect: swiftness or leaping become slowness, night vision becomes invisibility, healing or poison become harming.
  5. At the end, gunpowder to make it a splash potion and dragon's breath (collected with empty bottles from the Ender Dragon's breath) to make it lingering.

Potions on a server

On a server with friends, potions for the shop or for rewards are given with /give: pick your server's version above and you get the command the way it understands it (since 1.20.5 the type goes in potion_contents; before that, in the Potion tag). For custom effects (another level, another duration) without a potion, use the /effect command generator. And to hand out items with enchantments and a name, the /give generator.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get a «Mundane Potion»?

Because you put the effect ingredient (sugar, magma cream…) straight onto the water bottle. Nether wart goes first, which gives the awkward potion, and the ingredient goes on top of that. The mundane potion is no use for anything: throw it away.

What does redstone do and what does glowstone do?

Redstone makes the effect last longer; glowstone raises it to level II, but it lasts less. You can't have both: a long potion can't be made strong, or the other way round. Some (night vision, fire resistance, water breathing…) have no level II.

How long does a lingering potion or an arrow last?

A lingering potion's cloud applies the effects at a quarter of their duration, and a tipped arrow at an eighth. A splash potion lasts as long as the drinkable one if it lands at your feet, and less the further away it lands.

How do you get the Potion of Luck?

In Java survival you can't: it has no brewing stand recipe. Only with the /give command (above) or in creative mode.

Where do I type the /give command?

In the game chat, with the slash in front, if you're an operator (op). Or in the server console, without the slash and with the player's name instead of @p.

Does it work for Bedrock?

The recipes are almost the same, but the command isn't: in Bedrock potions are given by number, not by name, and there are a few that don't exist in Java. This tool is for Java, which is what Paper servers run.
