Minecraft circle and sphere generator

Pick the size and we draw the shape block by block: circles, ovals and spheres, solid or hollow. With the blocks you'll need and, if you have a server with WorldEdit, the command that builds it in a second.

In blocks, from 1 to 128. Same width and length, a circle; different, an oval.

North is up · each square is one block · the purple lines mark the centre

Blocks in total

56 blocks

With WorldEdit on your server

//hcyl stone 10

It's built with your position as the centre, at your feet and one block tall (add the height at the end for a tower).

Row by row, to build it by hand
  1. skip 7, 7 blocks
  2. skip 5, 2 blocks, gap of 7, 2 blocks
  3. skip 4, 1 block, gap of 11, 1 block

North to south; each row, west to east.

Create your free Minecraft server

Works for Java and Bedrock. The command, only on servers with WorldEdit.

Getting it into the game without losing count

  1. Mark the centre with a block of another colour and note its coordinates (F3).
  2. Build the two middle rows first, north to south and west to east: they're the cross that holds everything else.
  3. Carry on row by row with the “Row by row” list: each line says how many blocks to skip and how many to place, west to east.
  4. For a sphere, finish a layer before going up to the next. Scaffolding comes down quickly at the end.

To fit it to something you've already built, count the blocks of its wall and use that as the diameter.

With WorldEdit, in a second

On a Paper server with WorldEdit, stand where you want the centre, type the command shown above (by default only ops can use WorldEdit) and the whole shape appears. If you don't like it, //undo removes it. For a round tower, add the height at the end of //cyl: //hcyl stone_bricks 10 30 is a hollow tower 21 blocks across and 30 tall.

Building big like this is much easier on a server that doesn't depend on the host keeping their computer on. Always arguing about who leaves the world open? See how to run an SMP with friends.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a perfect circle in Minecraft?

With square blocks there's no perfect circle: it's approximated by placing every block whose centre falls inside the circle. Pick the diameter here, copy the grid row by row and start with the middle row, which is the longest. The bigger it is, the rounder it looks.

Odd or even diameter?

With an odd number, the circle has one block right in the middle, handy for a torch, a beacon or a pillar. With an even one, the centre falls between four blocks. Both work; WorldEdit only makes odd ones.

How do I build a sphere or a dome?

Layer by layer: move the slider to see each height and build it before going up to the next. For a dome, the top half is enough. When hollow, the top and bottom layers come out full because they're the roof and the floor.

What's the WorldEdit command for a sphere or a cylinder?

//sphere block radius makes a solid sphere and //hsphere a hollow one; //cyl block radius height, a cylinder (//hcyl, hollow). The radius is (diameter − 1) / 2: a circle 21 blocks across is //cyl stone 10. The tool writes it for you.
