Minecraft /effect command generator

Pick the effects with their level just as you see it in the game, how long they last and who gets them. The commands show up below, written for your server's version, ready to copy.

To start with: · · ·

Effects Speed II · change

Set the level as you see it in the game (Speed II = 2; 0 = without it). The command takes one off by itself.

/effect give @p speed 300 1

How /effect is written

Since 1.13 it looks like this: /effect give <player> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles]. For example, /effect give @a speed 60 1 true gives everyone Speed II for a minute, without particles. What's in square brackets can be left out, but in order: to set the amplifier you have to write the seconds first.

Up to 1.12 there was no “give”: /effect Steve 1 60 1, and the effect could be written as its number (Speed is 1). The generator uses the number for those versions because it's what all of them understand, from 1.8 to 1.12.

Every Minecraft effect

With its id (what goes in the command), its number up to 1.12 and the version that brought the ones that weren't in 1.8.

Ideas for your server

  • Night vision for builders: /effect give YourName night_vision infinite 0 true. Without particles, you barely notice it.
  • An event: Glowing for everyone (@a) during a hide-and-seek game or a manhunt, so they can be seen through walls.
  • Make it apply on its own: put the command in a repeating command block, or in a datapack (the datapacks guide explains how).

Frequently asked questions

I put level 2 and get Speed III. Why?

Because the command doesn't ask for the level but for the “amplifier”, which starts at 0: Speed I is 0, Speed II is 1. Here you type the level as you see it in the game and the generator takes one off.

How do I make an effect last forever?

Since 1.19.4, with “infinite” instead of the seconds: tick “Forever”. It doesn't exist in older versions; the longest is 1,000,000 seconds, about eleven and a half days of play, and you give it again when it runs out.

How do I remove an effect?

Pick “Clear effects”: /effect clear with the player removes them all, and with the effect's name after it, only that one. Drinking a bucket of milk also removes them all.

Where do I type the command?

In the game chat, with the slash in front, if you're an operator (op). Or in the server console, without the slash; from the console @s doesn't work: use the player's name or @a.

Does it work for Bedrock?

No: Bedrock's /effect has no “give” and some effects have other names. This tool is for Minecraft Java (Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and the official server).
