Discord timestamp generator

You post “the event is on Saturday at 9 PM” and half the server lives in another time zone. Pick the date, the time and the zone you're thinking in, copy the code and paste it into your message: everyone will see the time in their own zone, or how long is left.

When is it?

Everyone will see it in their own time zone and language, wherever they are.

Pick a date and a time.

What time is this timestamp?

To show it as text on Discord, put it inside a code block or with a \ in front: \<t:1793476800:R>.

Does your bot post the events by itself? It needs to be on all the time.

How to use it

  1. Pick the date and time and, in “That time is in”, the zone you're thinking in (if you announce “9 PM Eastern”, “US Eastern”).
  2. Copy the style you want. For an event, the clearest is to combine two: <t:…:F> (<t:…:R>) gives the full date and how long is left.
  3. Paste it into the message as it is. When you send it, Discord swaps it for the date in each person's time zone and language.

Your browser does the maths: nothing is sent anywhere.

For your bot

A bot writes the same code. The number is the instant in Unix seconds (it's shown under the list); with the most popular libraries you don't even need to work it out:

  • discord.js: time(date, 'R') (from discord.js) gives <t:…:R>.
  • discord.py: discord.utils.format_dt(date, style='R').

That way an events bot can post “starts <t:…:R>” and the text keeps updating for everyone. If it needs permissions to post in the announcements channel, work them out with the Discord bot permissions calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you show a time on Discord in everyone's own time zone?

With a timestamp: <t:NUMBER:STYLE>, where the number is the moment in Unix seconds and the style is a letter (R for “in 2 hours”, F for the full date…). Discord converts it to the time zone and language of whoever reads the message.

What do the letters t, T, d, D, f, F, s, S and R mean?

t is the time (4:20 PM) and T with seconds; d the short date and D the long one; f date and time (what you get with no letter) and F the same with the weekday; s and S, short date with time, without and with seconds; R, relative time (“3 days ago”, “in 2 hours”), which keeps updating by itself.

Why does it show a different time from the one I set?

Because the timestamp is stored as an instant, not as a clock time. If you made it thinking of US Eastern time but the generator was set to another zone, the instant is different. Pick the zone you're thinking in above (“US Eastern”, “UK”, “Central Europe”…) and it lines up for everyone.

Do they work in bot messages and embeds?

Yes, in the message text and in an embed's description and fields. The bot just writes the same code: in discord.js with time(date, 'R') and in discord.py with discord.utils.format_dt(date, style='R').

Can I show the code without Discord converting it?

Yes: write it between backticks (as code) or with a backslash in front, \<t:1793476800:R>. That way you can show it to others.

Does your bot go offline when you turn off your PC?

At NapNodes you can host it for free: 256 MB, Node.js or Python, always on, and you only have to renew it every 7 days with one click in the panel. No card. If it falls short, the Mini plan (512 MB) is €1.50 a month: see the Discord bot plans.
