Superflat world for your Minecraft server

In singleplayer, a superflat world is a button; on a server you have to write it into server.properties, with the layers in a format nobody knows by heart. Pick one of the game's presets or make your own (layers, biome, trees, villages…) and copy the two lines. For Minecraft Java, Paper and Spigot included; it all runs in your browser.

Designed it in singleplayer? Paste its code

It's under “More World Options...” → “World Type: Superflat” → “Customize” → “Presets”, in the box at the top.

4 blocks tall, from Y -64 to -61: you stand at Y -60.

server.properties
level-type=minecraft\:flat
generator-settings={"biome"\:"minecraft\:plains","features"\:false,"lakes"\:false,"layers"\:[{"block"\:"minecraft\:bedrock","height"\:1},{"block"\:"minecraft\:dirt","height"\:2},{"block"\:"minecraft\:grass_block","height"\:1}],"structure_overrides"\:["minecraft\:villages"]}

The ground ends up at Y -61, below 40: slimes will spawn in slime chunks day and night. If they bother you, add more layers (at least 105 in total) or turn monsters off.

Code for singleplayer: minecraft:bedrock,2*minecraft:dirt,minecraft:grass_block;minecraft:plains

Try it on your free server

A Minecraft server for you and your friends, no card needed. In “Settings”, set “World Type” to “Superflat”, paste the generator settings and you're done.

How to put it on your server

  1. Stop the server. The world type is only read at startup, and the world folder shouldn't be touched while the server is running.
  2. Open server.properties and replace the level-type and generator-settings lines with the ones above (add them if they aren't there). At NapNodes you don't need to open the file: in “Settings”, set “World Type” to “Superflat” and paste the generator-settings value into “Generator settings”.
  3. Move the current world aside: the world type is only used when a new one is created. Rename the world folder (usually world) or back it up and delete it. The guide on resetting your server's world goes through it step by step.
  4. Start it. The new, flat world generates and you join as usual.

Want your usual survival world plus a flat one to build in, on the same server? That isn't done with server.properties but with Multiverse: a separate flat world, in creative mode.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my server flat if I set level-type=minecraft:flat?

Because the world type only counts when a new world is created. If the world folder already exists, the server loads it as it is. Move that folder out of the way (or delete it if you don't want it) and start the server: the new world will be flat.

Do I need generator-settings?

Always write it next to level-type. That's where the layers, the biome and the structures go; if it's empty you depend on what the version does by default, and in 1.21 a bug was reported (MC-274756) where the server didn't generate the flat world properly without layers written out.

Why are there so many slimes in my superflat world?

In slime chunks, slimes spawn below Y 40 at any light level, and the classic flat world has its ground at Y -61. To stop them, raise the ground above 40 (the layers have to add up to at least 105 blocks), play on peaceful or turn monsters off with /gamerule spawn_monsters false.

Are the Nether and the End flat too?

No. Superflat only applies to the overworld; the Nether and the End generate as usual. If you'd rather have a separate flat world without touching your survival one, create it with Multiverse (mv create creative normal -t flat).

Can I use the code of a singleplayer superflat world?

Yes. Under “Customize” → “Presets” in a superflat world there's the code (layers separated by commas, then “;” and the biome). Paste it into the tool and it gives you the lines for the server. It works the other way too: under the lines you get the code for singleplayer.

A creative server that's yours

At NapNodes the RAM in your plan is yours alone, and each machine's load is public on the status page. Try your flat world on a free Minecraft server, no card and no end date: it turns off when nobody's playing and you start it again with “Start”.
