To stop it (a music disc, for example): /stopsound @a master entity.player.levelup

Ideas for your server

  • Restart warning: the bell or the raid horn for everyone, together with a /title, a few minutes before restarting.
  • Rewards: the level-up or challenge-complete sound for whoever wins an event or finishes a quest.
  • Maps and minigames: a command block with the teleport sound when walking through a portal, or the anvil when falling into a trap.
  • Jump scares: the elder guardian curse or the Warden emerging, for a single player, at Halloween.
  • Tunes: several /playsound with block.note_block.* and different notes in a chain of command blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write /playsound?

playsound <sound> [source] [targets] [x y z] [volume] [pitch] [minVolume]. Since 1.20.5 the sound alone is enough: the source is master and whoever runs it hears it. Up to 1.20.4, the source and the targets are required. Arguments go in order: to set the pitch you have to write the coordinates and the volume first.

Why doesn't anything play?

Most often: the sound is misspelled (the command gives no error, it simply doesn't play), the player is more than 16 blocks from where it plays, or they've turned that source down in “Music & Sounds”. With “Where each player is”, everyone hears it right next to them, wherever they are.

How do I make everyone hear it, wherever they are?

With execute: “execute as @a at @s run playsound …” plays the sound at each player's position and only for them. That's what the tool writes with “Where each player is”.

What are volume and minimum volume for?

A volume above 1 isn't louder: it's heard from further away (about 16 blocks per point of volume). Minimum volume is what the chosen players outside that range hear; with 0, they don't hear it.

How do I play a specific note?

With the block.note_block.* sounds (harp, bell, pling, bass…) and the note's pitch: choose a note block sound and the list of the 25 notes appears, from F#3 (0.5) to F#5 (2), with the clicks the note block would need.

How do I stop a sound?

With /stopsound <targets> [source] [sound]. The tool gives it to you under the command: it's mainly for cutting a music disc or music, which last minutes.

Does it work on Bedrock?

Not as is: Bedrock has /playsound too, but with different sound names and no sources. This tool is for Minecraft Java (also Paper, Spigot, Fabric or Forge).
