Minecraft written book generator

Write the title, the author and the pages, with colours and bold if you like. You see each page as it looks in the game and copy the book's /give, written for your server's version. It comes with an example rules book: swap it for yours.

Welcome! This book has the server rules. Read them before you start building. Turn the page →

/give @p written_book[written_book_content={title:"Server rules",author:"Admin",pages:[{"text":"","extra":[{"text":"Welcome!","color":"gold","bold":true},{"text":"\n\nThis book has the server rules. Read them before you start building.\n\n"},{"text":"Turn the page →","color":"dark_gray"}]},{"text":"","extra":[{"text":"Rules","color":"dark_red","bold":true},{"text":"\n\n1. No griefing or stealing.\n2. Respect everyone in chat.\n3. No hacks or advantage mods.\n4. Ask before building near someone else."}]},{"text":"","extra":[{"text":"Help","color":"dark_green","bold":true},{"text":"\n\nIf you have a problem, message an admin in chat.\n\n"},{"text":"Have fun!","color":"dark_purple"}]}]}]
693 characters

It's over 256 characters: the game chat won't take all of it. Paste it in the server console (without the slash) or in a command block.

Ideas for your server

  • The rules book: what isn't allowed, on a page that takes a minute to read. Give it to newcomers and nobody can say they didn't know.
  • The welcome: how to get to town, where the shops are and your Discord link written on the last page.
  • Adventure maps and events: clues found around the world or a contest prize, marked so it can't be copied.
  • Server history: what happened each season, so newcomers can read it in the game.

Giving it only to first-time players needs a plugin or a command block. On a NapNodes server, commands go in «Console» (without the slash), however long they are. For more admin commands, see the Minecraft admin commands guide; to hand out items with enchantments and lore, the /give command generator; and for on-screen messages, the /tellraw and /title generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add colours to the book?

With the usual codes in front of the text: &6 gold, &c red, &l bold, &r to go back to plain black. You can type & or §; the tool turns them into the form the game understands. Careful: a colour removes any bold before it, so type the colour first and then &l.

Where do I type the command?

In the game chat, if you're an operator (/op), or in the server console without the leading slash. A book with several pages is almost always over the 256 characters the chat takes: in that case, paste it in the console or a command block.

It gives an error when I paste it, why?

It's almost always the version. Since 1.20.5 the book goes in the written_book_content component, and since 1.21.5 each page is written as text and not as JSON in quotes. Pick your server's version above and copy it again. If you use EssentialsX, tick «use minecraft:give»: its /give replaces the game's.

How much fits on a page?

About 14 short lines. Anything over that doesn't give an error, but doesn't show in the game; the tool warns you when a page looks too long. A book takes up to 100 pages and a title of up to 32 characters.

Can I make it impossible to copy?

Yes: with «Can't be copied» the book comes out as a copy of a copy, and those can't be copied at the crafting table. Handy for event prizes or adventure map clues.

Does it work on Bedrock?

No: on Bedrock /give doesn't take the book's contents. This tool is for Minecraft Java (Paper, Spigot, Fabric or Forge too).

No server yet?

At NapNodes you get a free Minecraft server, no card needed, on Paper and the latest version, with the panel console to paste these commands from your browser. And if you want to play without queues and with the server always on, the plans keep the RAM reserved just for you, with each machine's load in plain sight on /en/status.
