Minecraft days → real time

100 Minecraft days are 33 h 20 min of non-stop play.

Real time → Minecraft days

With the world running, 72 Minecraft days go by.

Seconds → ticks (redstone)

Game ticks
20
Redstone ticks
10

A repeater delays 1 to 4 redstone ticks (0.1 to 0.4 s). If the server lags, the game runs below 20 ticks per second and everything slows down.

How the Minecraft clock works

The game runs at 20 ticks per second and a full day is 24,000 ticks: 20 real minutes. Tick 0 isn't midnight but 6:00, when the sun rises; that's why /time set 0 is dawn and /time set 18000 is midnight. Every 1000 ticks is one in-game hour, and about 17 ticks, one minute.

  • Day (0 to 12,000): about 10 minutes.
  • Sunset (12,000 to 13,800): a minute and a half. From sundown you can already sleep.
  • Night (13,800 to 22,200): 7 minutes, when most monsters spawn.
  • Sunrise (22,200 to 24,000): a minute and a half.

If the server lags and can't reach 20 ticks per second, the day lasts longer than 20 minutes (and everything else goes in slow motion). With spark you see the real TPS.

Time commands on a server

  • /time set day, noon, night or midnight, or /time set with a number of ticks.
  • /time add with a number: moves the clock forward without going back (days already passed still count).
  • /gamerule advance_time false: stops the sun where it is (before 1.21.11, doDaylightCycle). Since 26.1, also /time pause and /time resume.
  • /gamerule players_sleeping_percentage 50: half the players sleeping is enough to skip the night (before 1.21.11, playersSleepingPercentage). Handy on a server with friends.

Since 26.1, /time works through “world clocks”: the Nether and the End have no clock of their own, so if you type it while there (or from the server console with another world), use /time of minecraft:overworld set day. Every rule at hand in the gamerules guide and the admin commands guide; step by step, with /weather to stop the rain, in how to make it day and stop the rain (in Spanish).

Frequently asked questions

How long is a day in Minecraft?

20 real minutes for the whole day: about 10 minutes of daytime, a minute and a half of sunset, 7 minutes of night and a minute and a half of sunrise. That's 24,000 ticks at 20 per second, the same in Java and Bedrock.

How long is 100 days in Minecraft?

33 hours and 20 minutes of non-stop play, without sleeping. Sleeping skips most of the night, so in practice a bit less. The other way round: in one real day with the world running, 72 Minecraft days go by.

What number do I put in /time set?

Tick 0 is 6:00 and every 1000 ticks is one hour: /time set 1000 (or day) is 7:00, 6000 (noon) is midday, 13000 (night) is 19:00 and 18000 (midnight) is midnight. For any other time, type it above.

How do I make it always day?

Set the time with /time set day and stop the clock with /gamerule advance_time false (before 1.21.11 it was doDaylightCycle; in Bedrock, /gamerule dodaylightcycle false). Since 26.1 /time pause also works, and /time resume starts it again.

Does time pass while the server is off?

No: the world clock only moves while the server is running. On a server that is always on, days go by even with nobody online, unless you stop the clock with the gamerule.

A 100-day challenge with your friends?

That's more than 33 hours of play: better on a server than in one person's world, so everyone can join whenever they can. At NapNodes the free Minecraft server has 3 GB, no card and no end date; you start it when you want to play and it stops on its own after 20 minutes with nobody on (with the world paused: the clock doesn't run while it's off). With a plan it's always on and the RAM is yours alone.
