Minecraft banner generator

Pick the banner colour, add patterns and see it as you go. Then copy the /give command to get it ready-made, or follow the steps to make it on a loom. It works for shields too, with all 42 patterns in the game.

Patterns with a drawing are approximate here; in game they have more detail.

1. Banner colour

2. Layers (2 of 12)

  1. Creeper face
  2. Border

3. Add a pattern

Colour of the new layer:

4. The command

For Minecraft Java 1.20.5 or later (also 26.x). Paste it in your server's “Console” or in the game chat (as an operator). 136 characters.

/give @p minecraft:lime_banner[banner_patterns=[{pattern:"minecraft:creeper",color:"black"},{pattern:"minecraft:border",color:"green"}]]

On the loom, without commands

Put the lime banner in the loom and, in this order:

  • 1. Black dye → “Creeper face”, with its banner pattern (paper + creeper head).
  • 2. Green dye → “Border”.

Examples to start from:

Whoever opens it will see this same design.

What banners are for on a server

  • Bases and clans: each group with its banner at the entrance and on its shield, so everyone knows at a glance whose is what. How to organise clans, in the guide “Minecraft SMP with friends”.
  • Shops and paths: one banner per shop or destination at spawn and newcomers find their own way.
  • The world map: named banners show up on maps, so nobody gets lost looking for someone else's base.
  • Prizes and events: /give lets you hand out the winner's banner or an event banner without crafting it. More useful commands in “Minecraft admin commands”.

Frequently asked questions

How many layers can a banner have?

On the loom, 6. With the /give command you can add more: the tool allows up to 12 and marks the ones you couldn't make on a loom.

How do I copy a banner I already have?

Put the patterned banner and a blank banner of the same colour in the crafting table: you get a copy and keep the original.

How do I put the design on a shield?

Combine the banner and a shield in the crafting table. Or pick “Shield with this design” in the tool and use that /give.

How do I mark my base on the map?

In Java, place the banner on the ground and right-click it with a map that covers that area: it gets marked with its colour. If you rename the banner on an anvil, the map shows the name too.

Does it work for older versions or Bedrock?

The command is for Minecraft Java 1.20.5 or later (also 26.x). Before 1.20.5 it was written differently, and in Bedrock /give doesn't take designs; the drawing and the loom steps work in any version that has those patterns.

No server yet?

At NapNodes you get a free Minecraft server, no card and no end date, on Paper and the latest version: put your name in the tool, paste the command in the panel's “Console” and the banner appears in your inventory. Each machine's load is public on the status page.
