Minecraft XP calculator

Type the level you have and the one you want: we tell you how many experience points that is, how much drops if you die and how many enchantments you get out of it. If you run a server, it also gives you the /xp command to hand them to whoever needs them.

From which level to which?

To give them on your server

Set them to exactly that level

/xp set @s 30 levels

Add the missing levels

/xp add @s 30 levels

Add the exact points

/xp add @s 1395 points

In the server console, type them without the slash. In game, with the slash and as an operator.

How experience goes up

Each level needs more points than the one before, in three bands:

  • Levels 0 to 16: 2 × level + 7 points per level (7 for the first, 37 to go from 15 to 16).
  • 16 to 31: 5 × level − 38 (42 to go from 16 to 17, 112 from 30 to 31).
  • 31 and up: 9 × level − 158 (121 to go from 31 to 32, and it keeps growing).

That's why reaching 30 costs 1,395 points and 50, more than three times that. It's the Minecraft Java formula since 1.8; the calculator adds it up level by level, so the number matches what /xp gives to the point.

Giving experience on your server with /xp

  • xp set Player 30 levels: puts them at level 30, whatever they had.
  • xp add Player 5 levels: adds five levels (with a negative number, it takes them away).
  • xp add Player 1395 points: adds loose points, as if they picked up orbs.
  • xp query Player levels: tells you what level they're at.

Instead of the name you can use @s (you), @p (the nearest) or @a (everyone). To use it in game you have to be an operator: the admin commands guide explains it. And if you don't want anyone to lose experience when they die, the rule is /gamerule keep_inventory true (since 1.21.11 rules are written like that; the rest, in the gamerules guide).

Frequently asked questions

How much XP do you need for level 30?

1,395 points from zero. Level 15 takes 315 and level 50 takes 5,345: each level needs more points than the one before, and from 31 onwards the jump is much bigger.

Why enchant as soon as I reach level 30?

Because the enchanting table charges 3 levels for the best option whatever your level, and high levels are worth many more points. From 27 to 30 is 306 points; from 47 to 50, 822. With what it takes to reach 50 you enchant 13 times if you spend each time you hit 30, and only 7 if you wait until 50.

How much XP do you lose when you die?

In Java, 7 points per level drop, up to 100 (at level 30 you pick up 100 of 1,395); the rest is gone. If you turn on the keep_inventory rule on your server, nothing drops or is lost.

How do I give levels to a player on my server?

With /xp (the same as /experience): “xp set Player 30 levels” puts them at level 30, “xp add Player 5 levels” adds five and “xp add Player 100 points” adds loose points. You have to be an operator; in the server console, type it without the slash.

Handing out levels on a server with friends?

On your own server the commands are yours and the world stays on even when you're not playing. At NapNodes the RAM in your plan is yours alone, the console is in the panel and each machine's load is public on the status page. Try it with a free 3 GB Minecraft server, no card and no end date.
