server.properties editor

Paste your server.properties (or start from a fresh one), change each option with a plain-English explanation next to it and take the finished file with you. Whatever you don't touch stays the same, and we warn you about options that no longer do anything in today's versions.

1. Your server.properties (optional)

Paste yours to change it without losing anything. Otherwise you start from a fresh one with Minecraft's defaults.

2. Change what you want

3. Your file

Stop the server and start it again after changing it: it reads the file on startup.

pvp, allow-nether and co. are now /gamerule

Since Minecraft 1.21.9, four options that plenty of tutorials still put in server.properties are no longer read by the server: pvp, allow-nether, spawn-monsters and enable-command-block. You change them with a command in the console, with the server running, and they're saved in the world:

  • Turn off PvP: gamerule pvp false
  • Close the Nether: gamerule allow_entering_nether_using_portals false
  • No monsters: gamerule spawn_monsters false
  • Command blocks: gamerule command_blocks_work true

Since 1.21.11 every rule is written like this, in lower case with underscores: keepInventory is now keep_inventory. If you're unsure about one, type /gamerule in chat and the game suggests the names your version understands.

What to change first

If the server lags, view-distance and simulation-distance: lowering the first from 10 to 8 and the second to 6 makes more difference than adding RAM (the RAM calculator tells you how much you really need). If your friends can't dig near the spawn point, set spawn-protection to 0. And leave online-mode on true. Every option, explained at length, in the guide “server.properties de Minecraft explicado” (in Spanish); and for a MOTD with colours, the MOTD generator.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't pvp=false turn off PvP?

Because since Minecraft 1.21.9 PvP is no longer in server.properties: it's a game rule. With the server running, type gamerule pvp false in the console. The same goes for allow-nether, spawn-monsters and enable-command-block; the editor gives you the command for each one.

Will I lose anything from my file?

No. Whatever you don't change comes out the same, in the same order and with its comments. Options the editor doesn't know (from plugins or older versions) stay as they are.

Do I have to restart the server?

Yes. The server reads server.properties on startup. The safest way is to stop it, replace the file and start it again: if you edit it while it's running, it may write over your changes when it shuts down.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser; the file never leaves your computer.

Why do accented letters come out as \u00f1?

It's the safe way to write any character outside basic English in this file. Minecraft understands it, and the server list shows the letter as normal.

At NapNodes, without touching files

In our panel, what people change most (MOTD, players, difficulty, game mode, whitelist, view distance…) is under “Settings” with a readable name, and if the server is running, saving offers to restart it. The RAM in your plan is yours alone, never oversold. And there's a free Minecraft server, no card and no end date.
