Is Minecraft down?

We're asking, right now, from our server in Europe, the Mojang servers that Minecraft Java depends on. We don't count complaints: each part is really checked, the way your game or your server would, and we tell you what you'd notice if it fails.

Asking Mojang's servers…

Is it Mojang or my server?

What we check

Minecraft Java isn't a single Mojang server but several parts. One alone can fail, and each one feels different:

  • Joining servers: every server asks here whether your account is real when you join. If this part fails, nobody can play on any normal server.
  • Profiles and skins: your skin and cape come from here. If it fails you can still join, but everyone has a default skin.
  • Names and UUIDs: turns a name into its UUID. Used by whitelist add, op and permissions plugins. To do it by hand, there's the UUID lookup.
  • Chat signing: the keys the server uses to check signed messages. Signed chat errors are explained in their guide.
  • Launcher and versions: the list of versions the launcher downloads. If it fails, new versions don't download, but the ones you have still open.

What we can't check is signing in with your Microsoft account, because that takes a real account. If the launcher won't let you sign in and everything is fine here, see the Xbox status page.

On your server, while it comes back

Nothing. The world, inventories and plugins aren't touched: the server stays on and just can't check accounts. In the console you'll see people trying to join dropped with “Failed to verify username” or that the authentication servers are down; that's normal while it lasts. Don't reinstall or change online-mode: when Mojang returns, everyone joins as always.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I join any Minecraft server?

If it happens on every server, including your friends' and the big ones, it's almost always that Mojang's account servers aren't answering: each server asks them whether your account is real before letting you in. You can see it above. If they're working and you still can't join, close the game and the launcher, open them again and, if it persists, sign out of the launcher and back in.

What does “Failed to verify username!” mean?

That the server asked Mojang about your account and wasn't told you had logged in. It happens when Mojang is failing and when your launcher session has expired. If everything is fine here, it's the second one: restart the game and the launcher.

If Mojang goes down, does anything happen to my server or my world?

No. The server stays on and the world isn't touched; it just can't check accounts, so nobody new can join until they're back. Whoever was already inside usually keeps playing. Don't reinstall or change anything: when Mojang returns, everything works as before.

What if I set online-mode=false so people can join in the meantime?

They could join, but without account checks anyone can come in with someone else's name, yours and your permissions included, and afterwards everyone would have a different UUID and seem to have lost their inventory. It isn't worth it for an outage of a few minutes.

Does it work for Minecraft Bedrock?

No. Bedrock (mobile, consoles, Windows) signs in with your Microsoft and Xbox account, not with these Mojang servers. For that, see the Xbox status page.

Setting up your own server?

If you want one for your friends without opening ports at home, NapNodes has a free Minecraft server, no card needed, with its console and files in the panel.
