Minecraft dialog generator

Your server's rules in a window that pops up for whoever joins, and a menu with buttons to go to spawn, open your Discord or copy the IP, from the pause menu too. Write your own, download the datapack and upload it: no plugins, using the game's own /dialog command. Everything happens in your browser.

No rules yet? Tick them in the server rules generator and paste them here.

  1. Opens the rules dialog above

  2. For any player, no op needed (uses /trigger)

  3. Discord, store, map… Starts with https://

  4. The server address, a code…

To test it, in the console: dialog show YourName my_server:normas · dialog show YourName my_server:menu. Players: /trigger normas · /trigger menu · /trigger spawn.

Goes in pack.mcmeta inside the datapack:

{
  "pack": {
    "description": "my_server dialogs (napnodes.com/en/tools/minecraft-dialog-generator)",
    "min_format": 121,
    "max_format": 121
  }
}

How to install it on the server

  1. Download the datapack and don't unzip it: Minecraft reads it as a .zip, with pack.mcmeta inside, at the root.
  2. In your server's panel, under Files, open the world folder (world, unless you changed level-name) and then datapacks. If it doesn't exist, create it, and upload the .zip there.
  3. Press Restart. datapack list in the console tells you it's enabled.
  4. Leave and join again: two seconds later the rules should pop up. The menu opens with /trigger menu or from the pause menu, if you ticked it.

If the datapack won't load, see the guide on how to install datapacks on a server. What each file does, opening the menu from a chat message and input fields for admins are in the /dialog command guide (in Spanish).

What's in the datapack

One dialog for each part you turn on (dialog/normas.json for the rules and dialog/menu.json), two functions (load creates the scoreboards on startup and tick opens the dialogs when needed) and, if you tick it, the tag that puts the menu in the pause screen. So that anyone can open the menu, see the rules again or go to spawn without being op, it uses /trigger: it needs no op and only changes a scoreboard the datapack itself enables. The datapack's format number comes from the pack.mcmeta generator.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need plugins or mods?

No. Dialogs are part of Minecraft Java itself since 1.21.6, and the datapack is plain Minecraft: it works on Vanilla and on Paper. Players don't install anything.

Does it work on Bedrock or on versions before 1.21.6?

No. Bedrock has no dialogs, and in Java they arrived in 1.21.6; that's why the generator only offers that version and newer ones.

Can a player who isn't op use the menu?

Yes: open it, read the rules, go to spawn, open the website and copy the IP. Those buttons need no permissions (the spawn one uses /trigger). A “Run a command” button runs with the permissions of whoever clicks it: if the command is op-only, it won't do anything for everyone else.

The rules don't show up on join. What should I check?

Type datapack list in the console: yours has to show up as enabled. If it isn't there, read the startup console, which says which file fails. If it's enabled but nothing shows, check you don't have another datapack doing the same in its tick.json and that the version you picked is your server's.

Can I change the rules later?

Yes: come back here, change them, download the .zip and replace the old one (same datapack name). After a restart, the new ones show up.

Don't have a server yet?

NapNodes has a free Minecraft server, no card needed, on Paper with the latest version (dialogs work out of the box), with Files to upload the datapack and the console to test it. And if you want to play without queues and with the server always on, the plans have RAM reserved just for you and each machine's load on show at /en/status.
