Minecraft /particle command generator

Pick a preset or a particle, where it appears and how many. The command comes out below, written the way your server's version understands it, ready to copy into the chat or a command block.

/particle dust{color:[0.357,0.29,0.91],scale:1.5} ~ ~1 ~ 1 1 1 0 30
67 characters

What each number means

The command is particle <particle> <position> <spread X Y Z> <speed> <count> [force]:

  • Position: ~ ~1 ~ is one block above whoever runs it (you or the command block); without tildes, fixed coordinates.
  • Spread: how far they scatter around that point, in blocks and per axis. With 0 0 0 they all come out at the same spot.
  • Speed: how much they move as they appear. With 0, most stay still; with flames and smoke, 0.01 or 0.02 is already noticeable.
  • Count: how many each time. With 0 a single one comes out and the spread becomes the direction it shoots in.
  • force: they are seen up to 512 blocks away (without it, about 32) and even if the player has particles set to minimal.

The two forms of /particle

Since 1.20.5 (and in the 26.x versions) particles with options carry them in braces stuck to the name: dust{color:[0.36,0.29,0.91],scale:1.5}, block{block_state:"minecraft:stone"} or item{item:"minecraft:diamond"}. Up to 1.20.4 they went as numbers or a loose ID after it: dust 0.36 0.29 0.91 1.5 or block minecraft:stone. Potion swirls (entity_effect) only take a fixed colour from 1.20.5.

On a NapNodes server, commands go in «Console» (without the slash), and command blocks are switched on under «Settings» → «Game rules» → «Enable Command Blocks». More useful commands in the Minecraft admin commands guide, and the rules in the Minecraft gamerules guide.

For on-screen messages alongside the particles (when someone reaches spawn, when they win an event), there's the /tellraw and /title generator; and to hand out the prize, the /give command generator.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a /particle dust command copied from a video give an error?

Because the format changed in 1.20.5: the colour used to be loose numbers (dust 1 0 0 1) and now it goes in braces (dust{color:[1.0,0.0,0.0],scale:1}). The same goes for block, falling_dust and item. Pick your version above and the command comes out the way your server understands it.

How do I make them show all the time, without typing the command each time?

Put the command in a «Repeat» command block set to «Always Active» (you get one with /give @p command_block, and it needs enable-command-block, or the command_blocks_work game rule from 1.21.9). It runs 20 times a second, so 5 or 10 particles are usually enough.

How do I put particles above every player?

Choose «Above every player»: the command starts with execute as @a at @s run, which runs it at each player's position. Change @a to @a[tag=vip] or to a name so it's only for some of them.

I type it in the server console and see nothing

From the console, «~ ~ ~» is the world spawn point, not where you are. Use «Above every player» or some coordinates, or type it in the game chat as an operator.

Do particles lag the server?

The server, hardly at all: each player's computer draws them. But thousands per second will stutter players on modest machines, and anyone with particles set to minimal in Options → Video Settings won't see many, unless you tick force.

Does it work on Bedrock?

No. Bedrock has /particle, but with other names and no count or spread: it's a different command.

No server yet?

At NapNodes you get a free Minecraft server, no card needed, on Paper and the latest version, with the panel console to run these commands. And if you want to play without queues and with the server always on, the plans keep the RAM reserved just for you, with each machine's load in plain sight on /en/status.
