pack.mcmeta generator (data packs and resource packs)

Choose whether it's a data pack or a resource pack and which versions it's for, and you get the pack.mcmeta with each version's number and the fields each version reads. Already have one that shows in red? Paste it below and we'll tell you which versions load it and what it's missing.

{ "pack": { "description": "My server's recipes", "min_format": 121, "max_format": 121 } }

Data format: 121. It goes at the root of the .zip, next to the data folder (data pack) or assets folder (resource pack); not inside another folder.

Loaded without a warning by: 1.21 and 1.21.1

We don't see anything wrong with it.

The pack_format of each version

Taken from each version of the game, newest first. A dot marks the minor number: it's written as a list, [97, 1].

What changed in 1.21.9

Up to 1.21.8, "pack_format": 81 was enough (plus, since 1.20.2, supported_formats for a range). Since 1.21.9 the pack says which versions it works from and to with min_format and max_format, which accept a minor number. pack_format becomes optional: it's only needed so older versions recognise the pack, and supported_formats isn't allowed if the pack starts at 1.21.9 or later. That's why a pack.mcmeta from a 2024 video loads with a warning on a current server, and one written only with min_format isn't seen by 1.21.8.

Next: putting it on the server

A data pack goes, zipped, into the world's datapacks folder (in the panel, “Files” → world → datapacks); then /reload and /datapack list to check it loaded. It's step by step in how to install data packs (in Spanish). A resource pack isn't uploaded to the server: it's published at a direct link and set in server.properties with its SHA-1, as the resource pack guide (in Spanish) explains.

Frequently asked questions

What pack_format is 26.3?

For data packs, 121; for resource packs, 97.1 (written [97, 1]). Since 1.21.9 it's no longer set with pack_format but with min_format and max_format, and some versions have a minor number: 26.2 is 107.1 for data. The table below lists every version since 1.14.

My pack shows in red: “made for an older version” (or a newer one)

The number in pack.mcmeta isn't your version's. Paste yours above and we'll tell you which versions load it without a warning; then pick your version and copy the new one. Changing the number won't fix a pack that uses things the version no longer has (in 1.21 data pack folders became singular: function, recipe, loot_table…), but for many packs it's the only thing wrong.

Can I make one pack for several versions?

Yes, if the content works in all of them. Since 1.20.2 pack.mcmeta accepts a range (supported_formats) and since 1.21.9 it's written with min_format and max_format; if your range crosses 1.21.9, both forms are needed at once and the generator adds them. If each version needs different files, that's done with overlays, which this tool doesn't generate.

Where does pack.mcmeta go?

At the root of the .zip, next to the data folder (data pack) or assets folder (resource pack). If opening the .zip shows another folder with pack.mcmeta inside it, it's packed wrong and the game won't see it.

Do data packs and resource packs use the same number?

No. Each has its own count: in 1.21.1 a data pack is 48 and a resource pack is 34. Pick which one yours is above before copying.

A server to test your packs with friends?

At NapNodes, Minecraft servers run Paper on the latest version, and data packs are uploaded from the panel's “Files”. Try it with a free 3 GB server, no card and no end date.
