Minecraft UUID lookup

Type a player's name (or a UUID, to find out whose it is). We'll give you their account UUID, the one a server without account checks would give them, and the whitelist.json and ops.json entries ready to paste.

What the UUID is for on your server

The server doesn't store players by name, but by UUID. You'll need it if you:

  • Edit whitelist.json or ops.json by hand, for example with the server stopped. Each entry has the UUID and the name; without the right UUID, the player can't join or has no permissions.
  • Look for someone's inventory: it's in world/playerdata/<UUID>.dat. To give a player their things back from a backup, that's the file to restore.
  • Give permissions with plugins like LuckPerms, which also store each player by UUID.

Adding someone to the whitelist without touching files

The easiest way is not to edit anything: with the server running, type whitelist add Name in the console (and op Name to give them permissions). The server looks up the UUID for you and saves the file. It's all in the admin commands guide (in Spanish).

If you'd rather edit the file, in the NapNodes panel it's under Files, in the server's main folder. Paste the entry inside the square brackets (separated from the previous one with a comma) and type whitelist reload in the console, or press Restart.

online-mode=false: better not

The offline UUID is here because it's what people run into when they change that setting and “lose” the inventories. But turning off account checks lets anyone join under someone else's name, including yours and your permissions. It only makes sense behind a proxy like Velocity, which already checks accounts. We explain it in the server.properties guide (in Spanish).

Frequently asked questions

What is a Minecraft UUID?

A unique identifier for each Minecraft Java account, 32 digits and letters in five groups. It never changes, even if you change your name, and it's what the server uses to store your inventory, your permissions and whether you're on the whitelist.

Why are there two UUIDs, one of them “offline”?

With online-mode=true the server asks Mojang and uses the account's UUID. With online-mode=false it asks nobody and makes one up from the name, always the same for the same name (it's case-sensitive). They're different, which is why inventories seem to vanish when you change that setting.

I changed online-mode and the inventories disappeared. Are they deleted?

No. Each player has a file in world/playerdata named after their UUID. When you switch modes, the server looks for the other UUID, doesn't find it and creates a new player. Switch back to the previous mode and everything reappears.

If I change my name, do I lose my stuff on the server?

No: the account's UUID stays the same, so you keep your inventory, permissions and whitelist spot. It only changes on servers with online-mode=false, where the UUID comes from the name.

Does it work for Bedrock players?

No: it looks up Minecraft Java accounts. Bedrock players joining through Floodgate have another kind of identifier, and you add them to the whitelist with fwhitelist add Name.

Setting up your server?

If you don't have one yet, NapNodes has a free Minecraft server, no card needed, with its console and its files in the panel. And to see whether a server responds, try “Is my Minecraft server online?”.
