Hytale Server Lag: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Hytale is in early access and its server works hard: it generates the world as you explore, moves every creature and calculates the physics. When it stutters it's almost always one of five things, and you can tell them apart by looking at exactly what goes wrong.
What kind of lag you have
If the world takes a while to appear as you move (gaps, terrain loading in front of you) or the server freezes for a few seconds now and then, it's usually memory: too much world loaded for the RAM it has.
If everything runs in slow motion for everyone at once (mobs moving in jumps, blocks slow to break, the day passing more slowly), it's the processor: the server can't keep up with everything happening at each moment.
If it only happens to one player and everyone else is fine, it's their connection or their computer, not the server.

Check the gauges first
Open “Home” while the lag is happening
In the panel, “Home” shows the server's memory, processor and disk right now. Look at them while someone notices the lag, not afterwards.
Look at “Performance”
The “Performance” charts tell you whether memory sits at the maximum all the time or whether the processor maxes out exactly when players spread across the map or night begins.
Read the “Console”
Server warnings (especially if they come one after another while it's struggling) usually say what's costing so much: a failing mod, a world being generated or a lack of memory.
View distance, the first thing to change
It's what uses the most RAM: every player keeps all the world around them loaded up to that distance, and if you explore in different directions the server loads that circle several times over. Hytale's official manual recommends not going above 12 chunks (384 blocks), for performance and for gameplay.
On NapNodes you change it in “Settings”, in the performance section: “View distance (chunks)”. Hytale rewrites its settings when it shuts down, so you change them with the server stopped (the panel says so and won't let you edit them while it's running); it applies when you start it again. On a self-hosted server it's the MaxViewRadius key in the server's config.json.
If the server is struggling, try 12 and, if it still lags, go down two at a time. Players see a little less far, but the world stops loading in pieces.
Exploring and new world
Generating world is the most expensive thing the server does. In the first days, when everyone explores land nobody has visited, it's normal for it to run worse than later on, when almost everything you travel through already exists and only needs loading.
If you all go exploring at once in different directions, that's the worst case for RAM and CPU: better in groups, or have some explore while others build near the base.
Every loaded world in the universe/worlds folder takes memory. If you tried other worlds and no longer use them, copy them out (with “Files” or a backup) and remove them.
Mobs and mods: what uses the processor
CPU is decided mostly by the players and creatures (animals, monsters and NPCs) around at the same time. Farms with huge numbers of animals or areas with dozens of enemies together are felt by everyone.
Mods count too: the ones that add creatures, world generation or systems that run non-stop are the heaviest. If the lag started when you installed one, remove it from Server/mods in “Files”, restart and compare. Hytale is in early access and many mods are still young: a buggy one can cost more than the rest of the server put together.
To check whether it's the creatures, “Settings” has “Spawn mobs”: turning it off for a while (with the server stopped, like the other settings) and seeing whether the lag goes away tells you where the problem is. Turn it back on afterwards: without creatures the game changes a lot.
When it really is memory
Hytale runs on Java. When memory sits at the maximum, Java spends more and more time freeing it, and that shows up as freezes of a few seconds and high processor use for no obvious reason. If the charts confirm it and you've already lowered the view distance, you need more RAM.
On NapNodes the server starts by giving Java your server's RAM minus a share for what Java uses outside it (at least 1 GB). If you give it more RAM, the startup recalculates it on its own: there's no file to edit.
As a guide, the Hytale RAM guide says: 4 GB for a small group, 6 GB for 5–10 players exploring and 8 GB for communities or modded servers. Your plan's RAM is yours alone (no overselling): it doesn't drop when other customers play.
Get free RAM
In “My servers”, at the top, you'll see your account's free RAM. If you have none, “Buy RAM” adds what you need at €2 per GB per month.
Give it to the server
On the server's card, “Adjust”: choose the new RAM and it saves on its own.
Restart
The new RAM arrives when you restart: the notice comes with the “Restart” button.
If it's only bad for one player
Hytale uses UDP (the QUIC protocol). Busy Wi-Fi, a mobile connection, a VPN or an antivirus that inspects traffic show up as jumps and disconnections for that player only. Have them try a cable and no VPN.
Distance matters too: NapNodes servers are in Europe, so from Spain or the rest of Europe the ping is low; from the Americas it will be higher, and the game feels less smooth even if the server has power to spare.
And if a player has a weak computer, what feels slow may be their own game (low frame rate), not the server: with the server full and others playing fine, it's their machine.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Hytale server stuttering?
Almost always because of too much world loaded for its RAM (high view distance and players spread across the map), because of lots of creatures or mods using the processor, or because of one player's connection. The panel's memory and processor gauges tell you which.
What view distance should I set on a Hytale server?
The official manual recommends not going above 12 chunks (384 blocks). If it's still struggling, go down two at a time.
Does more RAM fix Hytale lag?
Only if the problem is memory: if the charts show it sitting at the maximum. If it's the processor that maxes out, more RAM won't fix it: lower creatures, mods or view distance instead.
Why is there lag only when exploring?
Because generating new world is the most expensive thing the server does. Once the area exists it only needs loading, and it runs smoother.
Shall we set it up for you?
Hytale servers from €8 a month, never oversold: your RAM is yours alone. And if you'd rather start without paying, there's a free Hytale server, no card needed.
