How Much RAM Does a Hytale Server Need?
The official manual puts the minimum at 4 GB, but what really decides memory is how much world the server has loaded at once. Here's what pushes it up, what brings it down and which plan to choose.
What uses RAM (and what uses CPU)
RAM is decided mostly by the loaded world: view distance and players each exploring their own way. Ten players together at the same base load far less world than ten spread across the map.
CPU, on the other hand, is decided by the players and creatures (NPCs and monsters) around at once. A typical sign of running short of memory in Java is that CPU goes up: the garbage collector works harder. If it runs out completely, the server crashes with OutOfMemoryError (what to do).

View distance comes first
The manual recommends not going above 12 chunks (384 blocks), for performance and for gameplay. That's already a lot of world: 384 blocks is about 24 Minecraft chunks, and Minecraft ships with 10. With lots of players spread across the map, lowering it is what saves the most RAM. You change it with MaxViewRadius in the server's config.json (the config.json guide); since Update 7 it accepts 1 to 32 chunks.
Which plan to choose
A rough guide, and it depends on how you play: for a small group, 4 GB (Village); for 5–10 players exploring at once, 6 GB (Kingdom); for communities, mods or lots of loaded world, 8 GB (Empire). With the RAM calculator you pick players and mods and it tells you which one.
If it falls short, you don't need to change servers: on NapNodes the RAM belongs to your account. In “My servers”, “Buy RAM” adds as much as you want and, with “Adjust” on the server's card, you give it to that server; if you already have free RAM from another plan, “Adjust” is all it takes. The new RAM arrives when you restart it, without reinstalling anything.
And the RAM you pay for is yours alone (never oversold): it's always available, not just when other customers aren't using it.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4 GB enough for a Hytale server?
It's the official manual's minimum and it's fine for a small group. With more players exploring separately or a long view distance, 6 or 8 GB is better.
What makes a Hytale server use more RAM?
The loaded world: view distance and players spread across the map. Capping it at 12 chunks, as the manual recommends, helps the most.
Can I add more RAM later?
Yes. On NapNodes, “Buy RAM” in “My servers” and then “Adjust” on the server's card to give it to that server. If you already have a plan, you only pay for what's left until your next renewal. The new RAM arrives when you restart.
Shall we set it up for you?
Hytale servers from €8 a month, never oversold: your RAM is yours alone. And if you'd rather start without paying, there's a free Hytale server, no card needed.
