Your Minecraft Server's Spawn: Change It and Remove the Protection That Stops Block Breaking
Two questions come up together for almost everyone who sets up a server: how to put the point where people appear (the spawn) where you want it, and why your friends can't mine or place blocks near that point while you can. The second isn't a bug: it's spawn protection, which is on by default. Here are both, with the exact commands for today's version.
What the spawn is (and isn't)
The world spawn is the point where people appear when they join for the first time and when they die without a bed. There's one for the whole server.
Each player can also have their own respawn point: the last bed they slept in (or a charged respawn anchor, in the Nether). When they die, if they have one, they go back there and not to the world spawn. That's why changing the spawn doesn't move anyone who already sleeps at home.
And the game doesn't drop you exactly on the point: in survival it puts you in a safe spot nearby, within a radius of 10 blocks by default (the respawn_radius rule). If you want people to appear exactly on the point, you'll see how in step 2.
Rather not set it up yourself? Minecraft servers from €6 a month, no contract and a full refund within 72 hours. Or create a free Minecraft server, no card needed.
1. Changing the world spawn
Go to the spot
Join the server and stand where you want people to appear. You need to be an operator (op): the admin commands guide explains how to make yourself op from the console.
Set it
Type /setworldspawn in chat. With nothing else, it sets it where you are. From the panel “Console” there's no “where you are”, so you give the coordinates, without the slash: setworldspawn 120 70 -45 (you can see them in game with F3, on the XYZ line).
Choose the facing
After the coordinates you can add an angle so people appear facing a particular spot (for example, towards the entrance of your base): setworldspawn 120 70 -45 90. Since 1.21.9 you can also add the pitch, and the spawn no longer has to be in the overworld.
Check
With an account that hasn't slept in any bed, die or join for the first time: you should appear near the point. The change doesn't need a server restart.
2. Making people appear exactly on the point
If you've built a welcome room or a small platform, the radius of 10 blocks makes some people appear outside it, on the roof or on the ground next to it. It's fixed with a game rule, in the console: gamerule respawn_radius 0. On NapNodes it's also in “Settings”, among the rules: “Respawn location radius”, with the server running.
Since Minecraft 1.21.11 rules are lowercase with underscores; in earlier versions the same rule was called spawnRadius (gamerule spawnRadius 0). If it tells you the rule doesn't exist, that's why (every rule, with its old and new name).
3. “My friends can't break blocks at spawn”
That's spawn protection: in server.properties, spawn-protection=16 by default. Around the spawn, in a square of 16 blocks in each direction (33 × 33 blocks), only operators can break or place blocks. Everyone else mines and the block pops back, or they can't open or place anything.
What confuses people most: if the server has no operators at all, the protection does nothing. That's why it tends to “appear” suddenly the day you make yourself op: it lets you (you're op) and not your friends.
On a server among friends the usual thing is to remove it. Don't op everyone to get around it: an op can also wipe the world, change the game mode or kick anyone.
On NapNodes, Minecraft servers already start with spawn-protection=0, because they belong to a group and aren't public. If it happens to you, someone has set it again or your server.properties came from somewhere else (for example, when bringing the server over from another host): you remove it the same way.
In the NapNodes panel
“Settings”, “The game” section: set “Spawn protection” to 0. It saves as soon as you change it and applies on restart: press “Restart”.
Or by hand, with the server stopped
“Stop” (if you edit server.properties with the server running, it may write the old values back when it shuts down). In “Files”, open server.properties, find spawn-protection=16 and change it to spawn-protection=0. Save and “Start”.
Check
As soon as it starts, your friends can build at spawn. With 0 the protection is switched off completely.
4. A player's respawn point
To move just one person (for example, someone who's lost their bed far from everything), you don't need to touch the world spawn: spawnpoint Name 120 70 -45 from the console, or /spawnpoint while standing on the spot to set it for yourself.
That point is lost, like a bed's, if someone breaks the block or the player sleeps in another bed.
5. A “real” server spawn: /spawn and protected areas
With Paper, which is what we install on NapNodes, you can go further with plugins (installed from “Mods & plugins” in the panel):
EssentialsX Spawn (a separate module of EssentialsX) gives you /setspawn to set the point and /spawn so anyone can go back to it whenever they like. It also decides where newcomers appear: the newbies section of its config.yml. The EssentialsX guide covers the permissions your players need to use /spawn.
WorldGuard (it needs WorldEdit) protects an area in exactly the shape you want, not a square: you mark the corners with the //wand axe, create it with /rg define spawn and give it flags, like /rg flag spawn pvp deny so nobody fights on arrival. If you use WorldGuard, leave spawn-protection at 0 so you don't have two overlapping protections.
Before moving anything big
Changing the spawn doesn't touch the world, but if you're going to build a welcome area or remove the old one, make a backup first: in the panel, “Backups” → create. If something goes wrong, you're back in a minute.
If you don't have a server yet: on NapNodes you can create a free Minecraft one, no card needed, and try all this with your friends; if you outgrow it, it moves to a plan with RAM that's yours alone.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't my friends break blocks near spawn?
Because of spawn protection (spawn-protection=16 in server.properties): only operators can build within 16 blocks of the spawn. Set it to 0 and restart; on NapNodes, “Spawn protection” in “Settings”.
How do I change the spawn on my Minecraft server?
Stand on the spot and type /setworldspawn as an op. From the server console, with coordinates: setworldspawn x y z.
Why don't I appear exactly at spawn?
Because the game puts you in a safe spot within a radius (10 blocks by default). With gamerule respawn_radius 0 you appear on the exact point; before 1.21.11 the rule was called spawnRadius.
Does spawn-protection=0 remove the protection completely?
Yes: with 0 there's no protected area and anyone can build next to the spawn. Also, if the server has no operators at all, the protection doesn't kick in either.
How do I make a /spawn command so players can go back?
/spawn isn't a vanilla command: the EssentialsX Spawn plugin adds it on a Paper server. With it, /setspawn sets the point and players need the essentials.spawn permission.
Shall we set it up for you?
Minecraft servers from €6 a month, never oversold: your RAM is yours alone. And if you'd rather start without paying, there's a free Minecraft server, no card needed.
Your server doesn't show up in the game? Check it in a second with “Is my Minecraft server online?”: players, version and MOTD, free. Need a player's UUID for the whitelist or permissions? Look it up here. Handing out enchanted items? Build the command with the /give generator.
Rather not edit the file by hand? Use the server.properties editor: every option explained, with a warning on the ones that no longer work.
