Mods and Plugins Together on a Minecraft Server: Hybrids and Alternatives
You want a modpack and, at the same time, LuckPerms, homes, land protection or a web map. The short answer: on a normal server you can't, with a hybrid you can, partly, and there's almost always a mod that does the same job as the plugin. Here's each route, with the good and the bad.
Why they don't mix
Plugins (Paper, Spigot, Bukkit) and mods (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) hook into the game in different ways. A plugin uses the Bukkit API, which only exists in Paper and its relatives; a mod changes the game from the inside through its loader. That's why a Paper server ignores the mods folder and a Fabric or NeoForge server ignores the plugins folder.
Mods don't even mix with each other: a Fabric mod won't load on NeoForge, or the other way round. Each one is made for its own loader and its own Minecraft version.

The hybrids: Arclight, Mohist and Youer
A hybrid is a modded server that also imitates the Bukkit API so plugins can load. The well-known ones: Mohist (on Forge, the oldest), Arclight (on Forge, NeoForge or Fabric) and Youer (from the Mohist authors, on NeoForge). None of them is official: not from Mojang, not from Paper, not from the loaders.
They work, but with small print. They lag behind Minecraft: as of October 2026, the modern version best covered by the hybrids is 1.21.1, while Paper and Fabric are already on the latest. Many plugins that reach deep into the game (NPCs, models, anticheats, worlds) fail or behave oddly, because they expect real Paper. And when something breaks, neither the mod author nor the plugin author will help you: they'll tell you to try it without the hybrid.
Put plainly: a hybrid makes sense if you already have a Forge or NeoForge modpack on a version it supports and you're missing one or two plugins with no equivalent. To start from scratch, almost never.
What usually works better: the mod that does the plugin's job
Almost everything people ask a plugin to do on a modded server already exists as a mod, and many are server-side only (players don't need to download anything for them). Pick the loader based on your mods and look for each plugin's equivalent for that loader.
Permissions and ranks: LuckPerms
LuckPerms itself has a version for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with the same commands (/lp) as on Paper. If you already know it, nothing changes: the LuckPerms guide applies just the same.
Homes, warps, /tpa, /spawn, /back: Essential Commands or FTB Essentials
They cover the basics of EssentialsX. Essential Commands is the lightweight one for Fabric (and it respects LuckPerms); FTB Essentials is the one used in Forge and NeoForge modpacks.
Protecting areas from griefers: Open Parties and Claims or FTB Chunks
They take the place of WorldGuard or GriefPrevention: each player or team claims their chunks. Open Parties and Claims runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.
Who broke what, and undoing it: Ledger or CoreProtectNeo
They do CoreProtect's job: they log blocks and chests and let you roll back by player, area and time. Ledger is for Fabric; for NeoForge there are independent ports such as CoreProtectNeo.
The ones that are the same everywhere: spark, Chunky, BlueMap, WorldEdit and Simple Voice Chat
These come as both a plugin and a mod: spark to see what's causing lag, Chunky to pregenerate the world, BlueMap for the web map, WorldEdit for building and Simple Voice Chat for proximity voice (this one each player also has to install).
Discord chat: Discord Integration
It does DiscordSRV's job on modded servers: it links a Discord channel with the in-game chat, on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.
And if what you want is plugins with a bit of “mod”
If your server is mostly plugins and you only miss a bit of new content, stay on Paper: most players can join without installing anything, even from Bedrock with Geyser, which doesn't work on a modded server. Many gameplay changes (recipes, structures, world generation) are done with datapacks, which work on any kind of server; we explain it in the datapacks guide.
The question that decides it: do your players need to see new things (blocks, creatures, machines)? Then mods, and everyone installs the modpack. Do you only want commands, ranks, an economy and protection? Then Paper with plugins (the full comparison is in Paper, Fabric, Forge or NeoForge).
How it's done on NapNodes
In the panel, inside your server, “Mods & plugins” → “Server type” switches between Paper, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge with your world kept (plugins or mods that don't work on the new type are set aside, not deleted). The mods and plugins tabs only show the ones from Modrinth and CurseForge that work with your type and your version, so you'll find the right equivalent by searching for its name.
Hybrids aren't installed from “Server type”. If you really need one, ask in “Help” and we'll look at it with you, without promising that all your plugins will work.
So your friends can join a modded server, each server has a napnodes.com/jugar/… page with the client-side mods ready to download.
Make a backup
In “Backups”, before changing the type.
Pick the type based on your mods
In “Mods & plugins” → “Server type”, the loader and version your mods or modpack need.
Install the equivalents
In the mods tab, search for LuckPerms, Essential Commands, Open Parties and Claims… and “Install”. They're added with their dependencies.
Restart and test
With “Restart”. If something won't start, the console tells you which mod is failing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use mods and plugins at the same time in Minecraft?
On a normal server, no: plugins run on Paper and mods on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge. Hybrids (Arclight, Mohist, Youer) try, but they lag behind Minecraft and many plugins fail. What usually works best is using the mod equivalent of each plugin.
Which is better, Mohist or Arclight?
For modern versions, Arclight is usually recommended, and it exists for Forge, NeoForge and Fabric; Mohist has a longer track record on older Forge versions. Neither is official and both leave some plugins not working.
Is there LuckPerms for Fabric or NeoForge?
Yes: LuckPerms has a mod version for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with the same commands as the plugin.
Do my friends have to install the server's mods?
The ones that add content (blocks, creatures, interface), yes. The ones that only work on the server, like LuckPerms, Essential Commands or spark, no.
Shall we set it up for you?
Minecraft servers from €6 a month, never oversold: your RAM is yours alone. And if you'd rather start without paying, there's a free Minecraft server, no card needed.
Your server doesn't show up in the game? Check it in a second with “Is my Minecraft server online?”: players, version and MOTD, free. Need a player's UUID for the whitelist or permissions? Look it up here. Handing out enchanted items? Build the command with the /give generator.
