Best Project Zomboid Multiplayer Mods (Build 42)
A good mod for a server is one that's made for Build 42, holds up in multiplayer and doesn't cause trouble. This list comes from the Steam Workshop, checked on 21 October 2026: each mod with its Workshop number, its Mod ID and what it adds when you play as a group.
Before you add anything
A Build 42 tag isn't enough. Many mods carry both the 41 and 42 tags on the Workshop but haven't been touched since before 42.20 (July 2026), and that version changed things that break mods. Check the “Updated” date on its page and read what the author says about Build 42 and multiplayer.
Workshop mods only. The Indie Stone supports Lua mods; Java mods are installed by hand, change the game's code, and the studio warns (in its note of 21 October 2026) that they break with patches and can be a security risk. On a shared server, better without them.
A few at a time, with a backup. If you add ten at once and something fails, you won't know which one it was. And removing a mod mid-game can make whatever depended on it disappear.

So you don't lose everything when you die: Skill Recovery Journal
Skill Recovery Journal (Workshop 2503622437, Mod ID SkillRecoveryJournal). Your character writes a journal of what they've learned, and your next character, if they find it and read it, gets the skills and recipes back. On a server where dying is normal, it's what stops people quitting after a silly death (what else happens when you die on a server).
In Build 42 it needs another mod by the same author, Mod Update and Alert System (Workshop 3077900375, Mod ID ChuckleberryFinnAlertSystem): put it before it in the list. Its page says it's required on B42, even though it was last updated in April 2026; it's the update notice for the author's mods and doesn't touch the game.
For looting as a group
Proximity Inventory (Workshop 2847184718, Mod ID ProximityInventory). In a single tab you see and take what's in every nearby container and corpse. Its author has updated it for 42.20 onwards; each player can switch it off for themselves in the mod options.
Has Been Read (Workshop 2544353492, Mod ID P4HasBeenRead). Marks the books and records your character hasn't read or hasn't finished. Its author says it works on stable Build 42, in multiplayer too.
Better Sorting (Workshop 2313387159, Mod ID BetterSortCC). Sorts items into categories that make sense. According to its author, it works on 42, 41 and multiplayer, and can be added or removed in a game already in progress.
For the world, and for bragging rights
Rain Cleans Blood (Workshop 2956146279, Mod ID RainCleansBlood). Rain slowly washes the blood off floors and walls and, in Build 42, off clothes and cars too. The server decides it, so in multiplayer everyone sees the same thing, and you can add or remove it whenever you like.
KillCount (Workshop 2553809727, Mod ID KillCount). Counts kills by weapon in a tab on your character and, in multiplayer, lets you see everyone else's and the whole server's. For some friendly rivalry.
Cars: the KI5 ones
KI5's vehicles are among the most used mods on the Workshop. All of them need that DAMN Library (Workshop 3171167894, Mod ID damnlib), their shared library, which the author has tested in multiplayer on 42.20. For example, the '91 Range Rover Classic (Workshop 2409333430, Mod ID 91range).
Check at the end of each car's description that it says it's compatible with Build 42 multiplayer: not all of them are yet.
For the admin: errorMagnifier
errorMagnifier (Workshop 2896041179, Mod ID errorMagnifier). When a mod throws an error, a button appears that shows it. With it, the player who says “something weird popped up” can send you the exact error, and you know which mod to remove.
How to add them to the server
In the server's .ini, the Workshop numbers go in WorkshopItems= and the Mod IDs in Mods=, separated by semicolons and in the same order. In Build 42, each Mod ID has a backslash in front: Mods=\ProximityInventory;\RainCleansBlood. Players don't need to subscribe to anything: the game downloads the mods when they join. It's all explained in the guide to Workshop mods on a Project Zomboid server, and the mod list tool writes both lines for you with the backslash in place.
On NapNodes: the “Mods” tab
Search by name
In your server's “Mods” tab, type the mod's name and click “Add”: the panel takes the number and the Mod ID from its page. You can also paste the Workshop link.
Add what it needs
If the mod depends on another one (like KI5's cars on that DAMN Library), the panel tells you in “Installed” with “Add the missing ones”.
Watch for warnings
Mods marked as Build 41 only come up with a warning. And the panel doesn't accept Mod IDs with spaces or symbols (Authentic Z's, for example: “Authentic Z - Current”).
Restart
The server downloads the mods on start. With a long list, 8 GB is more comfortable than 6 (how much RAM for your mods).
Frequently asked questions
Which Project Zomboid mods work in multiplayer?
The ones their authors have adapted to Build 42 and multiplayer. Among the most used and up to date: Skill Recovery Journal, Proximity Inventory, Has Been Read, Better Sorting, Rain Cleans Blood and KillCount.
How do I know if a mod is for Build 42?
On its Workshop page: the tags on the right (Build 42) and, above all, the “Updated” date, which should be after 42.20 (July 2026). Also read what the description says about multiplayer.
Do players have to install the server's mods?
No: when they join, the game downloads the server's mods by itself.
How many mods can a Project Zomboid server run?
There's no fixed number: RAM sets the limit. A fair few fit in 6 GB; for a long list or extra maps, 8 GB. Add them a few at a time.
Can I remove a mod from a game in progress?
It depends on the mod: some say they can be removed without problems, but with others whatever depended on them disappears (items, cars, buildings). Make a backup first. If the game stutters after removing one, the lag guide helps you find the culprit.
Shall we set it up for you?
Project Zomboid servers from €12 a month, never oversold: your RAM is yours alone. And if you'd rather start without paying, there's a free Project Zomboid server, no card needed.
